For the first time, the NATO Medical Evaluation (MEDEVAL) course was conducted on U.S. soil, hosted by the 4th Security Force Assistance Brigade (4SFAB). First MEDEVAL Course of 2023
The NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine (NATO MILMED COE) has been active in ensuring the interoperability of medical units via its activities practically since its establishment. Our work in concepts, doctrine, processing of observations, and validating Lessons Learned and our courses are all key elements of this, but there comes a time when evaluating how well a team, a medical unit, or a treatment facility is needed, and that’s where our Medical Evaluator Course or MEDEVAL for short comes into play.
MEDEVAL of Norwegian Role 2 Forward
At the Norwegian base in Sessvollmoen, near Oslo, a team of Subject Matter Experts carried out a MEDEVAL in the third week of November 2022. They evaluated the rapidly deployable Role 2 Forward of the Norwegian Army.

Health Information Systems and Technology Working Group

Change of Command in the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine
On September 28, 2022, the NATO MILMED COE's Change of Command ceremony took place in Budapest. From October 2022, Colonel Dr. László Fazekas will take over the Director’s position of NATO MILMED COE from Brigadier General Dr. Dirk-Friedrich Klagges, who has been the Director of the Centre since 2019.

The NATO Near Real Time Surveillance Tool performs excellently on two exercises within 2 weeks
The NATO Near Real Time Surveillance Tool (NRTS) was deployed on the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Exercise 22 (CWIX 22) and the Exercise CLEAN CARE 22 in June. CWIX 22 was a virtual exercise, with the training audience split between the NATO Joint Force Training Centre in Bydgoszcz and logging in from all over the world via a secure connection on 13-17 June 22. Exercise CLEAN CARE 22 in the Czech Republic was a live exercise on 18-23 Jun 22. The purpose of both these engagements were to test the NRTS tool with scenarios that would exploit its capabilities and enable us to understand the utility of the tool across National and multinational medical treatment facilities (MTF).

A Letter of Intent was reached on cooperation between Georgia and the NATO MILMED COE
On 18 November, the Georgian Minister of Defence Juansher Burchuladze visited the NATO MILMED COE headquarters in Budapest to sign the Letter of Intent, which was previously signed by Brigadier General Dr. Dirk-Friedrich Klagges.
MEDEVAL in Ukraine
Between 7 and 12 November 2021 an international team of Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) from Hungary, Norway, Romania, Spain, the USA and The Netherlands, coordinated by MILMED COE carried out a medical evaluation activity - MEDEVAL - of the strategic aeromedical evacuation capability of a Ukrainian aircraft unit - UKR AN26 „Vita”, temporarily located in Zythomir - Ukraine.

One step closer to the pre-COVID period: Major Incident Medical Management and Support (MIMMS) course in Budapest
In September, MILMED COE received in Budapest the first participants since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Two courses have been held back-to-back, covering several aspects including preparation, communications/ radio procedures, command and control and triage through series of lectures, skills stations, workshops, table-top exercises, Hospital Exercise (HOSPEX) and practical exercises without casualties (PEWCS).
Virtual International Medical Management of Radiation Injuries (IV-MED)
The IV-MED course is designed to teach participants how to respond to medical emergencies involving radiation exposure/contamination and how to improve the treatment and care of the injured. The course consists of a combination of lectures, demonstrations and exercises.

Innovation Portal: the new source of information
At our last Steering Committee Meeting, in December 2020, Lessons Learned and Innovation Branch identified as an Innovation goal to become a source of information on new and developing technologies of operational medical interest. We have developed the "Innovation Portal" as a means to capture and share innovation information – from ideas to newly developed capabilities. We are doing this in the belief that by increasing awareness of Innovation ideas and developments, we can speed the adoption of new technologies and innovative processes within NATO.

“THE FIRST CONFERENCE FOR MEDICAL SIMULATION APPLIED TO LARGE SCALE EXERCISES”
In line with the PXD VIGOROUS WARRIOR 2019 conclusions, in order to improve quality of medical exercises and to increase realism in simulation, the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine (MILMED COE) in cooperation with the Bundeswehr Medical Academy is organizing the first Conference for Medical Simulation Applied to Large Scale Exercises, taking place from 28 to 31 October 2019 in the Bundeswehr Medical Academy in Munich, Germany.
2nd NATO MEDICAL LESSONS LEARNED CONFERENCE ON CIV-MIL INTERACTION
